Very handy location. Near to centre but quiet. Go to Golden Coffee on the next corner for breakfast

Comfortable and clean room. Extremely helpful staff. Christine and Christina went out of their way to help us.

We stay in San Francisco twice a year for work & pleasure. But this was one of the worst stays. The walls were so thin you could hear people walking, talking, and closing their doors. The windows were so bad you could feel a breeze all night long from them. The bath tub had chucks missing from it. It looks like this hotel has potential but they ran out of money.

It was a bit noisy, especially with the person walking in the room above mine. My main complaint was the single, very slow elevator. Windows in my room didn't open and no a/c so I would worry about this room in the summer (401). Easy walk to Union Square and local places to eat. Not the nicest neighborhood area but better than other options.

We were welcomed and all the facilites available were explained to us. The professionalism of the staff really enhanced our stay in San Fransisco

I would no question stay here again!

The hotel sure has style and is about 5 -10 minute walk from the cool tourist area. It had a fridge in the room that was ready to use as there is no kitchen in the hotel, nice gym with latest equipment, big TV, and good internet signal. I upgraded to penthouse which was quite inexpensive - less expensive than most regular rooms in near-by hotels, and stayed in what I considered to be a palace. What a room! What views of the city, big room, cool decor, comfortable bed, nobody else on the floor. This is the room to stay in when you are in San Francisco. This room was a steal, I did not want to go back home. I will always stay here when in San Fran.

Friendly/helpful staff, great decor, very clean; we liked the location very much, there's coffee shops/pastry and sandwich/pizza shops in surrounding area.Bed a little hard for our taste. Would return when in Sn Francisco.

Nothing special about this hotel & maybe that's what was good about this hotel since we were out & about most of the time & used the hotel for sleep & showering only.

room was fine but kinda small. it was nicely decorated but did not seem like it was worth what i paid for one night. i had rented a room at a motel nearby for half the price and got the same quality room with free parking. there is almost no parking in this area unless you want to pay $3.50 an hr at the meters or $35 for valet at the hotel. front desk was not very knowledgeable about surrounding area.

Had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Vertigo. The decor was modern and funky, the rooms were well laid out and the staff was extremely friendly. They have about 4 or 5 people working there so you get to know them on a first name basis which is great. The only real negative I have is location. It is a brisk 15-20 minute walk from Union Square. The walk to Union Square/Market St is fine because it is downhill but the walk to the Hotel is all uphill and can be tiresome, especially after a beg meal haha. Having said that, there is a solution! You can take the cable car from Market St. right up to Sutter St. (about 5-6 blocks) then simply walk the other 5 blocks down Sutter. All in all I had a very good experience and next time I am in San Fran will be staying here again!

The service was friendly and helpful. The room was comfy and nicely decorated, but a bit rough around the corners. It's an old building with great character, but if you shower in the morning , along with almost everyone else, don't expect a hot shower. The water was warm at least, but not hot. The location is great, and the parking was expensive. You really don't need a car if you are staying in the city for your whole trip. Buses, trains, and trolleys make getting around a breeze. Cup of Joe near the hotel has great lattes!

Amazing and central place. The sandwich Mexican store was always crash and economic . The only thing they should improve is the customer service

so-so... disappointing that no breakfast.. would not go there again.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Hotel Vertigo for one night and really enjoyed our time there. The hotel was a good price considering the location and the amenities it provided. The modern, contemporary decor of the room was nice. The only bad thing was that the hotel only had valet parking that was pretty pricey. Overall, I would definitely recommend Hotel Vertigo for people looking for a decent place to stay while in the city.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the hotel. Loved the decor and found the stff very helpful. Would stay there again

Great experience. The area starts to trail off a bit as you go away from Union Square into the Tenderloin but it's OK. The bed wasn't huge but linens and desk were nice.

great! gregory and sean at the desk are very helpful. an added attraction is that Gregory sings along with the cd tapes and fills the lobby with cheer! The Christmas decorations in the hotel were beautiful!

Here on business for 4 nights. An older hotel but you wouldn't really know from the rooms, clean, good furniture, free WiFi. I enjoyed it. The location was convenient. The neighborhood was safe, but not as nice as Union Square since this is close to the Tenderloin district.

The room was comfortable, and nice to return to after a full day. The staff was helpful in dining option recommendations in the area, and in making connections with airport shuttles. The music in the lobby was fun! The only concerns were that the coffee maker had to be moved to plug in, and that there really wasn't a table at which to eat "take out." A little creativity took care of both matters. Oh...and cell phones didn't work inside...but that was really the cell phone provider's issue.

I recently stayed for four nights at Hotel Vertigo in San Francisco. I would recommend it highly. This, the hotel in Hitchcock's Vertigo, is well located in Sutter St an easy walk downhill from the frenzy of Union Sq in a great location filled with students from the SFArt Institute and cafes. There is also a bus to take you back up the hill in case of tiredness! The hotel decoration in orange and white was done a few years ago and could do with some touching up in parts but this is minor. All my experiences with staff both at front desk and cleaning staff were helpful and friendly. The hotel does not have its own airport shuttle though will organize one. I used BART at Powell to get to and from SFO. It was a bit of an effort on arrival uphill with luggage from Powell but doable and not a unique experience in SF. I would definitely stay there again.

cool hotel-conveniently located near Union Sq-but far enough away that it was quiet; friendly staff; we stayed here while going to a Dylan concert at Bill Graham-we were able to walk to/from-the staff gave us info re buses; fun nearby neighborhood bars; neighborhood breakfast places just outside; amazing restaurant across the street; Saha-will def stay here again!

The Vertigo is nice! Simple and comfortable and in a great area. Our room was at the back of the hotel so we had peace and quiet. I highly recommend a visit here!

This boutique hotel is quite nice, and well situated near union square (3 min walk), fisherman's warf (20 min walk), and financial district/north beach. From what I read, hotels right in Union Square are riddled with homeless people. Hotel Vertigo definitely has less homeless around it, but I think it borders with Tenderloin, so it can get a tad shady at night. During the day though it's great! We walked up Polk (nice shops along the way) to the exploratorium and Greens Restaurant, which was very walkable and beautiful. North Beach is probably the least "sketchy" neighbourhood though, so I would recommend there if you're looking for a "cleaner" environment. That said, Hotel Vertigo's rooms are very nicely decorated, and the showers are modern and huge! The reception area smelled of smoke though; they seem to not mind people smoking right outside the sliding doors, which is an enclosed area so it wafts in. One other thing about the rooms; we had a room that was adjoined to another, and we could hear our neighbours *really* easily. Luckily, they were pretty quiet, but I can see this being a problem with some individuals. Request a non-adjoining room is my recommendation.

I initially booked the room because, even though it was a higher price than I wanted to pay, it was close to my evening destination and I thought I would save money by not having to take cabs to and from. The room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. For the price, I would expect some better quality channels on the tv...mostly shopping type channels. The staff was very polite and professional, no problems there. I have to say the price of parking would be the biggest deterrent to my returning. I went out to a local venue (which was conveniently close) and was out fairly late with my car, and ended up having to do the valet parking for over $40 after tax. Had I known that in advance, I would have found another hotel further out from where I was going. So, when I rated the quality of the hotel service as a 3, that was because of the expensive parking.

Excellent service. The staff was wonderful and the room was beautiful. Great public transportation to Pier 39 and fisherman's warf.

The hotel is very well located. The room is comfortable and quiet, but no view. The decor is a bit weird; too many styles, no consistency.

We stayed in two different hotels over our stay in SF; one was very close to the trolley lines and Union Square and the second was Vertigo in a quieter neighborhood. While I missed being able to jump on the trolleys, buses, etc as easily as in Union Square, I did not miss the homeless people and just kind of crazy people blasting music outside our hotel windows. We also found great casual cafes around Vertigo that were perfect for easy dinner when we were too tired to venture far away. Belissimo had excellent pizza and paninis! The hotel is partway through a renovation as others have noted. There's no A/C which I would have liked one night that we were there, but I got used to it and just turned the ceiling fan on high. Staff was very nice and bed was comfy. We also grew to like the California trolley line although it was not as great as the two other lines for North Beach.

We got a room on the top floor with a view... of all the other room's windows... expected at the price and in SF, but still not pleasant. The room itself felt very clean and sharp, although the white porcelain horse head lamps were a bit creepy. Free ice and water was no where to be found on the top or next-to-top floors, but we brought our own. The front desk was very helpful in telling us where all the fun places were, and we ended up walking a block to a strip of bars and late-night food. The next day we walked through China-Town, Little Italy, and all the way to Fisherman's Wharf, it was not a bad walk, and only took about 2hrs at a modest pace with multiple stops along the way. The trolley station was only a few blocks away, but the walk was certainly more fun. I didn't expect SF to be so hard to find parking, but we did, and at some of their rates, I'm starting to think opening a little parking lot would make me quite a rich man.

We had a lovely weekend at the hotel vertigo. Staff was helpful and friendly. The rates were great. The elevator is slow but it's a great excuse to take the stairs every once in awhile. I would stay there again.

I saw some reviews about rooms that didn't look like the pictures but at least in my case everything was just as expected. It was a lovely hotel, nice room, nice bathroom and comfy bed. Friendly front desk service and would definitely stay here again!

This is what I consider a pretty objective rating/review of the Hotel Vertigo on Sutter. The food in the area is good and affordable, the exec king room is decent, parking in public lots is affordable. That said ... the service was horrible and the valet appeared very irresponsible handling vehicles. I was charged for a night my car was never in the valet. I was told no one was around to make the correction. I did not sign the bilil and will dispute $35 of it to the credit company. I wish I didn't have to go through that hassle. Also the neighborhood is loud and very close to the undesirable 'tenderloin district'. To sum it up. Affordable but not desirable. I WILL NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN!

We spent Thanksgiving night here as we were in SF to spend the holiday with our son who's a student at Academy of Art. It's just around the corner from his apt & very convenient to the many of the AAU buildings. It's in the upper Tenderloin but we feel safe here(as compared to down a few blocks). The hotel has unique decor which we loved. The staff was very friendly. The petite rooms are very roomy.(No need for the larger room). Free WiFi was helpful as our son brought his computer over to show us some of his school work. Only a few blocks walk to Union Square and much less sidewalk traffic at this location. We will definitely stay here again.

The lobby is way to stark and plain. No warmth to it whatsoever. Rooms ok, towels nice as were the robes.
