Great Southern Hotel Melbourne - מלבורן

The bed was comfortable, there was a TV with variety of channels, room was small yet comfortable. The shower wasn't very enjoyable and there was noise coming from the court yard on a Saturday morning (7 am) - in all fairness they did say the courtyard is under construction and it will be noisy but I thought it will start at a more decent time. Bar these little flaws - we had a good time there.

Need to improve the cleanliness of the room

I ve stayed here many times before and particularily recoomend the classic courtyard rooms as they are new and very nice.

I always stay in a Classic Courtyard Room which is the newer part of the hotel. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Location is great. Staff on front desk are always helpful.

This was a great Location an old hotel with no modern updates but for the money definitely worth it

I chose this hotel for the location to public transport and price for a 3 star hotel, from the room pictures on the web site they all looked clean and neat, they also had a cheaper option for non serviced rooms, this didn't bother us so we took that option. Upon arrival front foyer is modern and staff pleasant and accommodating. We were put in the "Court Yard rooms" this more aptly should be named the prison block. Our room was closer to 1 star and most of the lights didn't work and the exhaust fan in the bath room resembled a Boeing 747 taking off. The bed was comfortable, the air conditioning worked, the TV was a 1990 48 cm CRT and if you liked watching snow it was good. Don't get me wrong I was happy to stay in this but would have preferred to know what I was getting before I got there, the price I paid was great for the location but not for the room. I would stay here again but would probably prefer on of the refurbished rooms they advertise on the web site.

No, its not the best hotel. But rhe staff is friendly and helpful and the rooms are ok. That location for that price ia probably as cheap you can go before a hostel.

One staff member on the reception desk was extremely rude and constantly rolled her eyes at us

The staff were very pleasant however the room was a bit of a let down as the carpet was badly stained stained and the grouting in the bathroom needed redoing. Also the double bed was very small lengthways so my partners feet hung over the edge.As this was billed as a superior double room the decor and fixtures could have been better maintained.

Standard room called Superior was small, a bit tired and smelt of smoke (suggest previous occupant had smoked in room). Upon complaint hotel staff quickly upgraded us to a suite which was fantastic. Clean huge comfortable room with big windows overlooking street with seperate lounge with couches, seperate bedroom and large bathroom. Although room at front of hotel it was very quiet.

Our stay was great as always.I can not fault at all. We always stay here and love it.

Stayed just for one night. Small, older and simple, but clean and fully functional room. Very close to city and Skybus to airport. Good value for one night stopover.

Tarriff is worth what was charged. Hotel is right near train and tram stops so getting around is no issue. TV reception is not great but then you are in the CBD, however would expect this to change at the end of 2013 when they need to go to digital. I saw the previous incarnation of this hotel when it was built/refurbished about 20 years ago and it is now starting to show signs of age. Overall comfortable enough as you mainly just want a roof over your head.

All you need in a hotel, Clean and comphy beds

Hotel room was in The Courtyard area which was very noisy due to so much surrounding concrete. However, I knew this was budget accommodation and the room was adequate and very clean. Location was close to free city tram but on my next visit to Melbourne, I would prefer to stay closer to the city centre.

Offers a great location, really close to everything - only a 5 minute walk to the aquarium. And rally close to the major tram lines, including the free city circle tram. Stayed in the superior twin, was quite cramped, not much of a view, windows very small, not much room and quite cluttered - the whole hotel once you get past the foyer and up to the rooms has quite a cramped feel. But good for the price paid. Cleaning service good, lovely main foyer, friendly staff. The bathroom in the room for quite satisfactory, more spacious than the bedroom. I'd recommend it for a cheap holiday accommodation, but if you're looking for something a little more romantic, definitely looks elsewhere - though you'll be looking at spending a little more.

I stayed here for a single night looking for a well located, cheap room. Got everything I wanted. Cheap nights accom, friendly service, fantastic location and clean. Very close to the station and the casino. I will happily stay there for similar reasons in the future. Not one to take the missus for a dirty weekend though unless you are planning on living out the cheap city hooker fantasy.

Basic amenities are provided but not toothbrush and paste. The room phone seems to have not been cleaned for months (a layer of dust can be visually seen). Otherwise, all good. Location is excellent to southern cross station and food. Everything is within walking distance! An average hotel for travellers who are not fussy. Another to note, rooms are without windows so not suitable for people who cant stay in such rooms.

The room was smelly and musty. Carpets worn and dirty . Bathroom fixtures chipped and dirty Hotel needs a major renovation and clean.

Noisy air conditioner undergoing renovation

Hi, I stayed at the Great Southern in early 2013 and although the location was great and the convenience factor was good, I was a little diappointed with a few things. There are no iron boxes or ironing boards in rooms. When I called, the receptionist said- "Yes, we have one but you need to come down stairs and get it". The rooms were also very dark, the air conditioning leaked and looked very old (and in need of updating). My friends came up to my room on the way out to dinner and the first thing they said was that the courtyard resembled a jail... I do however also realise that I paid a budget price and as such was not expecting an abundance of luxury but a little more refinement would have been nice.

We stayed 5 nights in the hotel, which we basically enjoyed. Close to all the central city action, public transprt system, etc. BUT - if only they could get their act together on the managent side of things! I complained every day (sometimes twice) about the fact that 2 of our lights were not working. Each day we were advised that it would be attended to that day. It turned out to be more than just a lightbulb replacement, and was never fixed. The room, though clean, up-to-date, and comfortable (though no windows to the outside world!?) showed many signs that the management, or certainly the maintenance side of things, just does not work. Toilet seat loose. Toilet brush handle came off. Not enough glasses.Not enough teaspoons. Soap & shampoo replacement spasmodic. A reasonable hotel spoilt by poor management practices.

The room was quite spacious considering it wasn't that big a room. The bathroom was very nice and spacious and fancy and functional. When I first got there I thought the Hotel was a bit plain (but I booked it for the cheapr price and convient location so I wasn't really expecting 5-star anyway) but the room grew on me - can't say why, it was all jsut good - and I would certainly consider it on any return to Melbourne.

Room had musty smell and very small. Should not have to pay to leave luggage in storage room for a few hours.

Have wanted to stay at the enterprise (now G.S.H of Melbourne) since it opened as I made most of the Wall frames for the hotel. I wanted the experience of sleeping between those walls. Most satisfactory. I had other reasons to go to Melbourne too and the Enterprise was convenient for the Southern Cross station, transport and sight seeing. There is no attached resturant which was a drawback. The addition of one with cheap meals would be an asset. By booking on line the nights accomodation was reasonably cheap.

Great location. Friendly staff. Clean room. Only problems with phone.

This hotel was perfect for our needs. It is located a couple of minutes walk from Southern Cross station, has a convenience store and bottle shop a few doors away and many coffee spots within minutes walk. We attended a concert at Edihad, was perfect, about a 7 minute walk. We checked our bags in early, for $2 each bag, and was able to check into our room at 12.45, as our room was ready. On the downside the hotel is under renovations, and the court yard at the moment is uninhabitable. The hotel however is overdue for a makeover, and will be great once it has finished. The view from our room overlooked Spencer St, through our huge arched, and able to be opened, window. We would definately stay again. Affordable and the staff where very helpful and friendly.
