Building is older but well maintained with a very friendly staff.

A last minute pick. View was great, after u got out of the room! No screen door on slider! Stuffy!

the hotel had nice location. The room was clean and equiped with stove and refrigerator, but carpet and fixtures were old. Elevator was only available to some rooms. It was dificult to walk up stair with luggage. Only two computers were in the lobby. But, they were not free, a little expensive to use.

the birds squaking all night long was horrible!! they never shut up. never have experienced anything like this in my life. this was supposed to be a "superior" room and for what we paid for it, it should have been even a little better. moldy smelly room and a bathroom fan that sounded like an airplane, anyway, never again

I was pleased with Uncle Billy"s. It was reasonably priced, with very pleasant hotel staff, and set in a lovely area a short walk from a gorgeous park. Yes, the hotel could use some renovation in places, but again, for the price and locale, it was perfectly adequate. The front desk lady reccomended a nearby Thai restaurant that was superb!

We booked late and this was the last affordable hotel available. Nothing in the room was broken, but the hotel left a lot to be desired. The biggest problem was the thinness of the walls. The first night the neighbors were talking all night and it was like they were in the same room. The second and third nights, the neighboring room's alarm clock went off at 5AM and there was no one in those rooms. You would think after the first night we called the front desk, they would have turned the alarm clock off. The hotel does have an Aloha breakfast of muffins, english muffins, and papaya halves which was a plus since there is very little in the way of dining options in the area. In a pinch, this hotel is fine. Otherwise, I would look elsewhere.

Very old - no services , noisy had to put in a complaint - spoilt the stay - too many young ones staying up till 3am in the pool making lots of noise.

The rooms were really run down and there were uninvited critters in our room. You get what you pay for.

Hotel personal acted like they were family. Beds were very comfortable. Hotel was clean and breakfast was just right. I look forward to staying there again at the next family reunion.

Good location to airport. Very good front desk service and the hotel is fairly clean. The hotel and rooms are little run down/outdated and needs refreshed and updated. Average hotel and included Wi-Fi is a nice benefit. Missed the included breakfast and can't comment on it.

Great location, great service. The hotel is very close to downtown and right off the shore. Besides the fact that the hotel is a little old, everything else was great.

After we switched rooms from the mynah birds inside court to the outside we were much happier. The personnel at the desk and all around was very friendly and helpful. The rates are good. We are from Waikiki and a hotel similar to yours is the Royal Grove, owned by the Fong family. It is cozy and comfortable.

We were looking for a family friendly hotel in hilo to spend a couple nights before heading to Kona. Location of uncle billys was grear close to gardens and enjoyed view of water. Refrigerator in room was a bonus. Breakfast offerings were limited but enough to get us going in the mornings.

The location of this hotel is great, the staff is helpful. However, the hotel is older and it shows; much of the inside is shabby and the room was a bit grimy.

We had a 'superior' room looking into the central garden area with partial ocean view ....it was really beautiful. At night u can hear bird calls from the trees in the garden. The back of the hotel has spectacular views of the ocean and mountain. Rooms were great and the staff was very helpful. Continental breakfast was adequate. Parking is limited, so you might have to park on the street outside if you come back later in the night.

We were disappointed with the overall appearance of the hotel. But i guess thats why its rated 2 star..

Unlike what I had heard online, this hotel is not that bad. Infact, I really enjoyed my stay here. The room I got was nice and quite spacious, as compared to the other hotels on other islands, for the same rate. The hotel is situated right in front of the backwaters and not too fr from the Hilo airport. The only thing some might find annoying is the sound of the crickets all night. Nonetheless, I would recommend this place to anyone who is planning to stay in Hilo.

This is an old hotel but, it has a real kamaina (local)feel. The room is very basic but also clean. Staff is very friendly and helpful.My only complaint is there is not enough adequate parking! If you show up in the middle of the day there is usually a lot of room in the parking lot. I had a late night and when I got back to the hotel I was told to find parking on the street. I am a woman travelling alone the thought of parking on a dark street was ridiculous so, I ended up parking illegally in a loading zone praying I would get towed. I was so paranoid I got up early to move the car.

It was a good value...parking is very sparse.

This place is not for everyone, as it is an old hotel, but I loved it. Our check in clerk was very friendly and made us feel comfortable from the get go. Kudos to her. Unfortunately, I cannot remember her name, but she was the Tues. night gal. She upgraded us to an ocean front room which was fantastic. Sliding doors on both sides provided amazing breezes. Coqui frogs are abundant and loud, if you are not used to loud....this may be taxing. For me....it was heaven.

We stayed there twice, first time the room was very good but the second time we arrived without a booking and secured the last available room, what luck! It happened to be one of the best located rooms, right at the beachfront overlooking a magnificient bay, could not ask for a BETTER room with a BETTER view at any price. Most certainly would return.

More of a 1 star hotel experience.

Uncle Billy's use to have a cute bar area They also were connected with the resturant that had a nightly Hula show. Without that the hotel is too run down too hold its own Sorry

Close to downtown and beautiful park. Staff friendly & helpful. Good value for the price but hotel appears old and run down. Room very clean.

Breakfast could have been better and the rooms could use a refreshing touch. The hotel is right on the water and provides for great walks and views. If you are looking for a beach, you need to find another spot. The hotel is convenient to everything if you have a rental car. You can walk to an outstanding park which is about 3 blocks from the hotel.

Hotel is in sad shape. It hasn't seen upgrades in decades. It has only DOUBLE beds. Nothing else. Staff was good tho. It is right on the bay and central to many sights. The "free" continental breakfast is basically toast and english muffins and coffee. The bay has no beach, just rocks. We loved Hilo and surrounding areas, but won't be staying at Uncle Billys again.

Yes, Uncle Billy's is an aging building but there is a certain local character and charm to it. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room had all the basics that we needed and was clean. Considering the very reasonable rates the free parking, wi-fi and basic continental breakfast is a great deal! There are a couple pretty parks just down the street and restaurants in walking distance. The location right on the water is picturesque.

Uncle Billy's is fairly classic -- simple, Hawaiian style from several decades ago. Small garden but with water and red-painted fences, our breakfast had all-you-can-eat papaya. The room was spacious and comfortable, but the plumbing looked old. Location is good (where lots of other hotels are too), basically if you have a car. Close to the airport. There was no real view from our window, but a comfortable lanai (balcony). Sheets are synthetic rather than cotton. Staff is very friendly. In the morning, in the lobby, they offer a free flower for the ladies -- ours were beautiful red and orange hibiscus.

We enjoyed our stay in Hilo. The location is great - you get a true feeling of rural Hawaii on the east side of the Island. The staff was so friendly with great advice and good stories to share. Though the place is showing signs of wear it was clean, safe and well maintained. We certainly can't say the same for Uncle Billy's in Kona. It was a big disappointment after our pleasant stay in Hilo.

We stayed at Uncle Billys for two nights. The hotel looks and feels like someone abandoned it 30 years ago. If you're really broke, its better than sleeping on the street but, a tent on a camping site might be actually a better choice.

The location is great - close to the airport, downtown Hilo, and the beach. The service was good and the light breakfast was an unexpected surprise. However, there are limited choices as to hotels in Hilo, so it's not like there's a lot of competition or a pressing need to renovate, update, etc. Don't expect anything fancy from the rooms. Do bring earplugs - the a/c unit is loud, and even louder are the birds and frogs. With the type of windows in the hotel (slat style), there's no real way to shut them out.

Friendly 'family' run hotel in need of much TLC. Breakfast was bread and jam (jelly) with water, guava juice and coffee/tea. Too much paper plates and cups for my liking. With that much waste creation there is no real need for the one recycling bin out front. General store was great place for refreshments, snacks and daily essentials. Parking was a real problem. I was lucky to park only once on-site. Constant smell of mildew. BUT room was clean and comfortable, KONA coffee was provided on first night and there was Wifi access free of charge. Overall, good place to stay and easy to locate after drving around island throughout the day. Value for money.

We loved Uncle Billy's! Stayed there on our arrival & departure from Hilo. All staff was very friendly, continental breakfast great, seaside pool very relaxing :)

Very nice people. Good breafast with Papayes BUT the hotel needs to be totally renovated.

This older hotel is awesome. We had a beach front room very reasonably priced. Everything is older, but very clean and comfortable. I will stay here again.
