this is a lovely hotel with luxury and convenience. the new wing which we stayed in has comfortable beds and clean roomy bath and kitchenette. the grounds are beautiful and the seacoast town near by is charming. a very good value considering they offered an expanded cont breakfast till late am.

Stayed in the new wing as the rest of the hotel is undergoing significant renovations , room was really nice and spacious with a kitchen and super comfy beds. There wasn't much choice available at the continental breakfast but it wasn't too bad - probably only temporarily being held in reception due to much of the hotel being closed. all the staff were very helpful

Overall, we liked the Algonquin Hotel. The front desk staff was cheerful, friendly, and very helpful. The older part of the hotel is undergoing renovation (we were told they should be done by June 2013), but our room in the newer part was clean, comfortable, spacious, and a great deal for the money!! The location is great! Outdoor heated pool was still open and looked inviting, even in October! We would definitely stay here again (though I suspect that when they finish the renovation, the prices will shoot up!)

Very comfortable. Unfortunately, there was some renovation work going on at the time which may have accounted for the very ordinary breakfast. I do like eggs for breakfast and this was not on the menu - otherwise very good.

A little apprehensive about booking after reading some reviews, but decided to go with more positive comments and glad we did. Even tho the hotel will close soon to complete renovations, our stay was quiet and wonderful. The only inconvenience was that the restaurants were not available. Otherwise staff was helpful, room was outstanding. So happy we went!

Great! You would never know they were remodeling the resort, so quiet!

The hotel is under major renovation is cannot be properly judged.We were on a holiday of 8 days which included Hiltons, Deltas and Best Westerns. All our rooms were very good, but yours was the best.We would like to visit again when everything is complete and you have proper restaurant and bar services in the beautiful old Algonguin.I turust that the proper amount of funding will be given to this project. It would be fabulous to see it rise to its old glory.

Hotal in construction gave us worst room in hotal available

So disappointed lounge bar and restaurant were closed due to renovation - was offered complimentary self service limited toast and pastries in reception area (no orange juice for example). Don't pretend to give a five star experience when half your establishment is closed.

While the hotel was in the midst of a major renovation, I found the room very nice and staff very hospitable. It was very quiet due to most of the hotel being out of service. The continental breakfast was OK. It is our third time staying at the hotel and we love it. I look forward to seeing the completed Algonquin next summer.

I fell in love with the town of St. Andrew and this hotel... the hotel is currently undergoing renovations, but they take the care not to disrupt your stay with the construction.... I highly recommend this property and area for sure~

While our room was quite lovely and well equipped, with the exception of this newer wing, the rest of the hotel is sadly worn and undergoing serious renovation. Besides the pool, the only "feature" was a continental breakfast, served in the lobby. The cheapest of paper plates, flimsy plastic silverware, and store bread in plastic bags was a poor contrast to the nice bathrobe we found in our room. To reach the dining room, you had to drive to the golf course, or walk 30 minutes. With the exception of the pleasant woman who checked us in, the front desk staff was not friendly and responded to our questions with cold reluctance, such as when we asked for a map to the Golf Course. This is a grand old dame of a hotel, which other than the front porch, looks almost abandoned. Enjoy your lovely room, but don't have any other expectations.

We were most impressed with the restorations-to-date. The annex (51 rooms) is beautiful. Updating of the main building is currently underway, which should bring this facility back to its original glory. Currently, there are no dining services, but the town has many nearby (within walking distance) restaurants. The overall location is beautiful. St. Andrews-by-the-Sea is a lovely, friendly community. We stop there annually on our way to PEI and always enjoy ourselves.

YOU SHOULD NOT BOOK GUESTS AT THE ALQONQUIN AT THIS TIME. A NEW COMPANY BOUGHT THE PROPERTY AND HAS CLOSED DOWN THE MAIN PORTION OF THE HOTEL. ONLY 51 OF THE 250 ROOMS ARE IN USE. GUESTS MUST TRAVEL OFF-SITE FOR A FEW MILOES TO EAT LUCH AND DINNER. A THIRD-RATE BREAKFAST WAS OFFERED IN THE HOTEL LOBBY. HARDLY ANY GUESTS---ALL IN ALL, A DISASTER. ASK FOR A REFUND FOR US!!!!

The Alconquin is a grand hotel but was disappointed that it did nto have a restaurant on the premises. I enjoyed my stay but , felt that I would have prefered a hotel closer to the water --since it would have been closer to the stores and restaurant and would have had a view of the Bay.

The room was very nice. It looked clean, but we found several potato chips on the run (that weren't ours) which indicated that it hadn't been vacuumed. The bathroom was large & clean, There was a small refrigerator and microwave and a table & 4 chairs. The hotel is closing in Oct. for renoavations and won't be open again until June. It was too far to town to walk, which might be a drawback for some.

Most of the hotel was shut down for renovations. Hopefully will be in better condition after renovations.

This is a beautiful historic hotel. Beautiful decor and great special features. Our room was spacious, clean and very comforable. The hotel grounds are beautiful.

Our room was in the new building and it was very nice, very large, very quiet with a peek view of the ocean. The AC/Heating worked very well and the linens and beds were very comfortable. The room had a small kitchen and a very nice bathroom, perfect for a long stay. The room was on OK as far as being clean, but certainly acceptable. I can understand the reason because the room was never cleaned in the two nights that we stayed there. We saw the cleaning staff working on our floor, but they never made it by our room. We called the desk twice and were told that they were under-staffed, but room service would be there. They never made it. We had to make an emergency run to the desk for toilet paper at 7:00 PM, very stressful! We asked The Fairmont group for some consideration with regard to the lack of room service and were denied. Thankfully, Hotels,com stepped up and made things right. It is such a shame that the Fairmont Group cannot get it right. What could have been a spectacular stay ended up being only so-so.

Beautiful old hotel with exceptional service and friendly staff. The town is quaint with a lot of shops, restaurants and plenty of activities. We definitely will return!

I booked and prepaid for smoking room with fire place. When arrive, was in a separate building with non-smoking room with no fire place. Was not what was avertised at all.

A comfortable stay in a large property which is in need of some TLC. Meals were on the expensive side and quality did not reflect price. Service was wonderful, though. All staff try their best to make the stay memorable.

The Algonquin is a grand old early 20th century resort hotel at its core with a more recent major room addition across the street attached via second floor hallway. The inn is on a hillside a quarter mile from the shore line. Hallways in the new addition are long and, with the personna of staff, give the place a corporate feel. It is a place to be best enjoyed with a thick wallet so that you can take advantage of the spa, golf, valet parking, and elegant dining. On a budget? You can still enjoy very well appointed and spacious rooms at a great location near the coast, lug your gear from inconvenient parking, and find fair dining in town.

If we had gone at a different time of year, we probably would have enjoyed ourself. Beautiful hotel. Very old. We had no a/c and it was warm and very muggie. There was to much clutter in the room decor to give it it's "victorian" feel, so it left very little room for your own things. Felt cramp and with the sticky air, we were not happy at all.

Friendly reception on arrival with no wait at front desk. Warm greetings from all staff. Will be back again.

A charming town with lot's of character and good restaurants. The hotel grounds and public areas are beautiful. We were assigned an older room. I got the impression no guests had stayed in that particular room for a while as there were cob webs here and there. The hotel is old and our room showed wear. There were no closets and it was also very small. These are observations that I would normally not mention but when it's a Fairmount you expect class and comfort. The hotel needs a big renovations.

We stayed here one night on our way along the Funday Coast. The hotel is very majestic looking and the lobby is fabulous with old architecture and all the staff were very friendly. Many people around walking their dogs, playing with their children, and there's a firepit they lit nightly to sit around. The location is up a hill from the town, which is a very quiet, quant town. Good for one night passing through, but I wouldn't recommend for long stays unless you're into vacations where you do absolutely nothing

In one word: Excellent. Our one night stay at the Algonquin was outstanding. It will not be our last visit. The hotel is very beautiful with a great history. The service was excellent. The cuisine is world class. I strongly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to spend a bit of time in a rich and pleasant historical surrounding. Thank You

The staff was amazing and hotel facility is very restful and memorable. Definite must stay if in the area.

We were so surprised to find this hotel and to be able to have such comfort. The only problem is that we only had one night. We plan on going back and staying longer! Great place!

Internet access poor. Inadquate wall plugs. If you can't make a closet, buy an armoir. The room was not acceptable for stays longer than 2 nights.

Room Service meal was excellent including the speed of the service with the hotel completely full this was a welcome surprise

This is our 2nd time at the Fairmont Algonquin and we were no less disappointed in our stay. Excellent customer service from the bellhops to the managers. Love the atmosphere. Food at the restaurant was very good. Rooms are a little small, but quaint. There are some minor flaws to the hotel...all cosmetic and due mostly to age (paint, dated amenities). You cannot beat the ambiance of this Guilded Age, style resort. We will be back!

We had difficulties finding the place in the dark (after 10 PM) because the signage in town is poor and the address misleading. If you come off the local highway (which is the only way to get to the end of the peninsula), then Harriet and/or Price of Wales St would be much easier to find. The personnel is very friendly. The room was luxurious (by 1960 standards). If you don't like the stuffy atmosphere of grand old hotels then stay away. If you like the flair of, say a Waldorf-Astoria, then this may be a good deal for you. Beware: this place is not near a beach, it is not for children (in spite of the extra programs for them), and it does not offer all that much on its own grounds. St. Andrews is cute - for 1/2 a day. Add another half for local area attractions and a second night may be justified - but again, only if you like the somewhat morbid charm of old hotels.

This was a beautiful hotel in a beautiful city. Great extras(walking routes,water for your walk and many options to do so) The staff were super accomidating and very friendly. Would have loved to stay longer but our schedule would not permit. Would love to return someday.

I have never had such a pleasant experience in any hotel/resort I have stayed in. From the moment we checked in to the time we left we were treated like royalty by the staff. They seem to be very used to going out of their way for the pleasure and comfort of their guests.

The hotel, service, and surroundings were much nicer than expected, with a personal feel. Would return gladly and will recommend to others.

The hotel was beautiful, in it's day, however, it is in bad need of repair, the grounds are wonderful, the staff excellent, however there was no air conditioning and it was extremely hot and humid, and it was very difficult sleeping, nice hotel but I would not return.

Fairmont has done a pretty good job with a historic hotel. The best amenity is the fresh-faced, young staff who are friendly and helpful. The rooms are small but they were in 1904 when the hotel was rebuilt. No air conditioning needed; but outside fires are. Still searching for a niche. The miniature golf "course" that replaced the tennis court is not it.

The hotel was quite nice. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The hotel is quite old and needs some work. The grounds are beautiful. We had breakfasts at the Verandah restaurant in the hotel. They were quite good. We also had dinner at that restaurant and were disappointed. The food was cold and definitely not worth the price.
