The place is a total dump. It needs to be torn down.For example, the elevetors did not work and no one worked on them while we were there and it looked like they had not worked for many months. Large 40 gal open trash cans in the hallways. It is all a mess. In addition people checking in were paying $83 a night.

The beds are hard as a rock , I would have slept better on the beach. There is a park house right next door so expect car alarms to go on at 4 AM ! No Internet connection except at the lobby. Very uninterested receptionists. Overall a bad experience. Do not recommend !

Lots of fun at the Collin's Ave hotel/hostel, just a block from the ocean. Easy check in, huge lobby and a GREAT swimming pool. Hotel desk was VERY helpful every step of the way. This is a little jewel at a quarter of the price, of other hotels in the area. Will stay there again.

Very old, hallways smelled damp and musty. Broken elevator. Could not regulate air condition (but at least it worked). No shampoo, extra bath tissue, or drinking cups. Less than basic accommodations. Would not recommend.

Don't recommend at all.

Every thing was good except the thin walls. 3 AM awakened by someone's roommate trying to get in...banging on the door and shouting for a long time.Then loud talking and laughing for about a half hour. Could not go back to sleep...tired the next day instead of well rested.

Very Old & outdated, walls are super thin, you can hear everything. Also, when I booked trip it never mentioned Hostel. Staff was friendly.

The staff was extremely helpful and obliging; however, it was kind of like staying in a hostel. The rooms were kind of dirty, there were very limited amenities, and they had a deposit for the key.

There were not enough towels in the room for 2 people, no facecloths - no amenities. Only 2 pillows on the bed and they were too soft. The closet had no hangers. The staff were pleasant.

Convenient location - but very noisy a night. Lobby area OK - but rooms very spartan. It was clean however.

Clean, great location, good price. Not for everyone. Great for the backpacker set in Miami Beach.

Well worth the reasonable 2* hotel cost, probably worth 3*s. Hotel has a nice pool, with mattress-ed lounge beds. Has a communal kitchen with 2 sets of burners, microwave, pots and pans. Large brown paper bags provided for guests to place their foodstuffs in, write on their name and room no and then place in the 3 very large fridges. Seems to work okay, there is a camera on to deter petty theft from the bags, although must say we had a 4 pint full milk bottle taken! Rooms reasonable size, beds comfortable, air con provided although non-adjustable. Bathroom adequate - small bars of soap the only toiletry provided. Room clean, furnished art deco style. Self-use laundry available for guest use evenings at a low cost. Reception staff all very laid back and knowledgeable. Free wi fi and a comfortable lounge by reception, and a large patio area adjoining the kitchen, furnished with tables and chairs. For those wishing to travel in a group, as well as the usual hotel style rooms they also have 4 and 8 bed dormitories available. These we think have shared bathrooms but would work out cheaper for those on a low budget. No restaurant, but cold drink slot machines are on site. All in all - we enjoyed our stay and would most likely return there if in the area. The guests are mostly youngish but us oldies did not feel too out of place!! The hotel is in a popular location which felt safe enough.Shopping, beach and public transport are all right on hand.

Horrible timing with check in. No ac in a few rooms. Horrible service. No hospitality at all.

Decent, great location!

There was no hot water in our room. They said it would get hot over time but our shower stayed only luke warm. The bed was not comfortable. The guests were very loud. As an alternative to the very expensive surrounding hotels, this will definitely work if you are just looking to party. I was impressed, however, that the hotel provided nice shampoo and tooth paste samples :)

This is perhaps the worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my life, and I've stayed in hostels while touring Europe. Anyone that is considering staying at the Tropics should go there with very low expecatations. The location is great, but the staff was very rude and the room was dirty and dank. It was mid-August and the room was hot, but the A/C is centrally controlled so I couldn't adjust the temperature. The bed was probably at least 20 years old. My experience with the staff was the worst aspect of the stay. All three of the concierges that I met seemed annoyed that I had questions regarding the local area, etc. One of the concierges was hanging out with his boyfriend everytime I walked through the lobby, and his brusk personality came out if I interrupted their conversations. There is no parking available at this "hotel". I parked in a garage down the street, which cost about $20/day. Most of the other guests were tourists who were there to party on South Beach. The pool area was always crowded and loud. This is definitely not a place to take kids. Stay somewhere else.

We had no other choice on a hotel in Miami Beach unless you wanted to pay a lot of $$$ for a night. This place was okay for just 1 night...can't do more than that. AC isn't controlled by you, so it gets real hot while you're sleeping. There was only 1 outlet in the entire room. Had to charge my phone in the bathroom. Pillows were tremendously flat...bed hard and uncomfortable. Bathroom looked really old with a small public bathroom type of toilet. No fridge, no microwave. If these things don't matter to you, you'll be good. Great location, just walking distance from beach and ocean ave. Hotel lobby is real nice. Great outdoor space with nice pool.

I stayed here because it was close to my meetings and stayed under my per diem rate. My room faced the parking garage next door, where car alarms and people shouting went on throughout the night. The bed sheets had distinct makeup stains of women's lipstick which remained all nights I was there. Other than that, the room was minimally furnished. No ironing board or iron, no directory or travel materials, no hotel instructions or phone numbers. I could hear guests in other rooms and heard one guest yelling in middle of the night for people to shut up. Parking is available at the garage next door for $16/day. Bring $20 cash for the deposit at the front desk for the room key and tv remote. The room key had a large metal rod attached to it so it was a pain to lug around in my pocket. I would recommend this hotel only if you are a bunch of cheap college students and for some reason want to go to Miami Beach (which isn't cheap by any means).

The hotels need upgrading like new sheets, towels etc.

If you only needs a bed and confortable people is good

We stayed 5 nights at The Tropics as a getaway before a cruise, and we are Very Impressed! It is located in South Beach, within easy walking distance to the beach, shopping and night life. The staff was friendly and helpful, and it was very clean! There is even a community kitchen that helped us cut down on food costs. We could not be happier with our stay.

Most apathetic and unhelpful staff. Strongly recommend against anyone who wants to have a pleasant stay. Not worth the price you put on it. Staff is totally not interested in solving small hotel problems like checking out the air conditioning.

It should be noted somewhere that you need to have 20 usd in cash to get the key to the room. Creditcard is not good and this creates problem if you do not know it.

Clean and cheap...!!!!

I can't imagine ever staying in this hotel again. The place is ancient, the elevator scared me to ride on, the service was (at it's best) indifferent, and it generally creeped me out. I stayed at a different hotel (also through Hotels.com) a couple years ago in the same area, THAT was a hotel, this was a dump with a check-in counter. If you decide to stay here, make sure to bring at least $20 cash. You'll need it at checkin as a depost just to get your room key. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this hole.

Great little hotel, cheap and you get what you pay for but everything worked, and in a great location! no dramas here.

The only thing this place had going for it was the location. It is near everything on the beach. There is no ice machine, restaraunt or bar, and not enough power outlets to charge 2 cell phones in the room. There was also a ten year old tv with really crappy picture.

The Hotel was very European and needs updated. TV wouldn't change channels. You are in South Beach so you shouldn't be watching TV anyway. The Hotel was priced decently but didn't have any frills either. Internet was only accessible from the main lobby. I would stay here again .

Even though then hotel is very old and dated it was very clean,nice pool and the community kitchen area is really a great idea for people who like to prepare their own food.great location close to everything you could want.Only draw back is the parking garage behind hotel and some moron's car alarm going off all night.Had a grat stay

This hotel [ the Tropics Hotel on Collins Ave in the South Beach area of Miami Beach is a O K hotel that could be much better if the management just tried a little harder .I was told upon making a resvation that a request for free parking would be part of my resvation.As it turned out the hotel didn't have any parking [free or otherwise ]. There is a city parking garage just around the corner on 16 street @ $16 per day [24 hours] .The room I had was spacious for Miami Beach,but didn't have any Kleenex , shampoo,conditioner 'only miniscule bar of soap and no other toiletries ,no ice bucket ,no coffee [ in room or lobby or elsewhere in the hotel ] and no hair dryer! If this hotel would have been in most any other location in Florida a current fair price for the room I had would have been $100 less per night .

My friend and I needed a place to stay for one night in Miami and tropic hotel was a great spot. Walking distance to Lincoln road. Around the corner from cameo the club we partied at. 2 blocks away from the beach. And 3-4 blocks away from south beach restaurant district. We had a great time. Good service. Great location. Reasonable price. Totally recommended .

Bad Customer service...... =(

The room was supplied with two towels and a washcloth, no cups, no ice bucket, no ice. I found a used plastic cup in the communal kitchen. No coffee available in the morining. Bring your own or go to the bakery on the next block. Window in bedroom opened a little, so was able to sleep without A/C, but don't count on having one in your room. If cost is no object find a better hotel.

Location was good. It was cheap and good hostel. It was ppleasent stay. No wlan in rooms

me 29 young professional with a 29 young professional gf , never married and no kids. Goal: stay on the beach next to all the action. This hotel accomplish this. Great location. Great Price. What this hotel is not is a destination. It is very basic, some would say outdated. There are no amenities and you do not come to this hotel just to stay at this hotel. I just came here to have a place that is near everything and I would not have to drive home drunk. Hope this helps

This hotel was exactly what I expected due to the reviews I had read before arriving there. We were only there overnight, but the staff was friendly, professional and helpful. The hotel seems old, but our room was clean and neat. There were some who were up pretty late and the noise bothered my friend so that she didn't sleep well that night. I would only recommend it if noise does not bother you.
