Clean, basic place to stay very near the city centre.

Overall, an excellent place to stay.

EXCELLENT GUEST HOUSE. I WOULD USE AGAIN. HANDY FOR TOWN, STATION AND PORT. CLEAN COMFORTABLE AND VERY WELCOMING OWNERS.

I thought it was a nice place to stay, and definitely worth it for the money. I had to check in quite late and the check-in process was quick and easy. The room was clean and quiet, and the bed was comfortable. The shared bathroom was also very clean and well looked after. There was also a kettle and coffee and some biscuits which we're good for a working session I had on one of the nights! I tried the (free) Internet one night -- it didn't work for a while and then it was a little slow (could have been someone watching iPlayer in another room, for all I know though), then I tried it another time and it was absolutely fine -- not major though! Location was also good (the area's perhaps not the nicest, but think it's generally okay) -- 10 mins or so for Southampton Central station, and about the same beyond for the city centre.

This property is not four star rated, two star at best according to my critical eye and my three day stay. The Brits are a little stiff but the management at this hotel reinforce that stereotype to the letter. This establishment is all about the money. The size of my room reminded me of a prison cell. The bathroom light could not be controlled by me and turned off automatically after exiting this included the bathroom fan which produced an annoying noise for three minutes. The television operated with the same thrifty concept. Thrifty was the mode of operation for this establishment which impacted the quality of bacon served for breakfast" and the use of wifi only in the dining room after you have consulted the caretaker. I understand that you get what you pay for, but please don' t mislead us. I would rather pay more and get my expectations met than to get to a place and be disappointed. When I arrived I was told I booked a single room and that I would share a bathroom and for my own bathroom I had to pay more. I reviewed my booking and there was no such notation. I payed the difference for a cell with a bath, but I would have preferred going to a REAL four star hotel, but the cancellation policy was cost prohibited. I would not recommend this hotel for any reason.

A very nice Guest House with friendly and helpful owner. Breakfast was very good indeed. Would recommend anyone to stay here.

The guest house was close to the train station and not too far from the main part of the city. The owner was friendly and helpful. The internet did not always work in the room but apparently the entire city is just now getting fiberoptic lines so hopefully it will improve. The room was small but very tidy and the breakfast was good as well.

Very comfortable and very clean, breakfast was very well presented and ample choice, would deffinitely stay again and would recomend it to others.

Just satisfied

Only had a 1 night stay but was satisfied with the room apart from it was not ensuite, although there were 2 bathrooms on the same floor. Breakfast was good and service effecient and pleasant, All in all an ok visit.

I stayed 2 nights at Argyle Lodge after an job interview at the end of June. The B&B is within walking distance to train station and the city centre. I was well provided for in terms of tea/coffee/snacks. Shower was a bit tricky at first, but ok once I got used to it. Would've liked to have a chair in the room (as 1 other reviewer pointed out). Coz the only thing to sit on is the bed!!!

Friendly owner, lovely room (clean, modern, fresh). Breakfast only served for 1 hr (8-9) and early checkout time (10am)

I will be very honest, not a place for couples and romantic weekends. First of all you need to be ready to share the bathroom and the bed was not comfy at all with very old matress....We were looking for nice place to eat and we ended up to go Winchester wich took us 25min in driving because there were no nice place to eat localy....

Perhaps it was because we are used to proper hotels that have been discounting their prices but I don't think that this establishment rated four stars or the prices that a hotel would charge. Although within walking distance of the centre it was still about twenty minutes away from the main shopping area. It was typical of the bed and breakfast establishments that I had to stay in as a young man and the breakfast was entirely predictable and missing the generous touches a modern hotel affords. To end on a positive note, we were very grateful for the tea making facilities that hotels are supplying less frequently these days.

Easy to locate from the port. A comfortable, reasonably priced, rest for a weary traveller. Downside: Lack of en suite facilities and an automatic lighting system that plunged me into darkness in mid shower! Took a couple of minutes before normal service was resumed and there was no switch for guests to reactivate the system. Positive: Sizzling hot plates and an excellent breakfast.

Clean, comfortable, friendly, accommodating and a delicious breakfast. What more could you want! Many thanks for a great stay!

I had late arrival (11pm) so room was assigned before I arrived and key left in a lock box. Good thing I thought to email owner prior about late arrival to get code or I may have been stranded at the door. Specifically booked & paid for Double Bed (Single Accommodation) but was given a twin room with two small single beds. No internet code provided, so had to wait until the next morning to check important email. To my surprise the toilet and shower were a communal facility down the hall and there was no air conditioning which made for a stuffy room that August night. Breakfast in the morning was nice and hosts were gracious. I never mentioned problem with room to owners as I was only there to sleep one night, but was anxious to leave. If I did not get there so late I would have liked to have had option to change rooms. Description never said there was a private bathroom, but nor did it say it was a shared bathroom either. Common assumption was for private facility. Online listing should provide a more clear or more specific description of the rooms and toilet/shower/air options as well as a note about late arrivals so as not to create disappointment or confusion.

Immaculately clean hotel, excellent location, good breakfast & friendly staff. It was just that everything in our room squeaked -- the beds, the floor, the doors, and eventually, my missus. Other than a good dose of WD40 sprayed around the room and appliances, this was an all round good value for money.

We arrived late evenning, following a tiresome day. The hostess was more than happy to check us in with a smile and helpful advice regarding parking. Although a small car park, there was plenty of parking space along adjoining side roads. It happened to be Cowes week when we stayed so spaces were at a premium. Short walk to the train station and town centre. Rooms are extremely well maintained, modern, clean and comfortable. I was delighted by the in-room facilities, especially choice of the coffee facilities. Breakfast is extremely good value, with a wide choice of cereals, yoghurts, fruit and jams. A reasonable sized full-english is included too, although not a belly-buster its cooked to perfection. Overall a superb stay. Thanks to the owners

My room was very clean and came complete with the all important kettle and beverage supplies I require to breathe let alone face a day. While there was some street noise filtering into the room, it did quiet down - and around 2am I awoke and felt I must be in the countryside it was so quiet. Breakfast was delicious and generous in portion size.

My wife and I were staying here for one night as we travelled from Winchester to Canterbury. The hotel was a good price and was valued appropriately. The bathroom/showers are separate from the rooms and the room we were in was very small (fit the bed and 1 cabinet). But for the price it was bearable. Good place to stay for a night or maybe a weekend getaway to see Southampton. About a 10-15 minute walk to the center of the city. Sidenote: Our door would slam shut everytime because of a problem with the hinges/closing mechanism. I imagine our fellow lodgers thought we were inconsiderate even though we found ways to hold on to the door to reduce the amount of noice the slamming would make.

From the minute I walked in to Argyle I was made to feel very welcome. Less than 10 minute stroll to the train and town centre with easy access all over south coast and New Forest. Lovely hostess and fantastic breakfast - couldn't fault the hospitality or cleaniless of the place. Particularly the bathroom which is all important to a female!!

I arrived with my son at the guest house at 8pm; very tired and hungry. There was no parking spaces left outside the house but there were a few spaces nearby on the street. I was directed to a local fish and chip shop where we purchased a takeaway (superb value for money). We retired back to the room which was very clean and comfortable, apart from the heat; it had been a warm day and the room was not well ventilated. There was a good sized window which we left open, and this helped to cool the room, allowing us to get a good nights sleep in the comfortable beds. In the morning I enjoyed a reasonably sized breakfast and then we checked out and continued our travels.

Vi hade inte dusch/WC på rummet. Dubbelsängen var 140 cm bred. OK för en natt. Frukosten fick man beställa vad man ville ha och det fanns mycket att välja på.

Wir waren 4 Nächte im Argyle Lodge in ein Doppelzimmer mit Bad und sehr zufrieden. Innenstadt und Bahnhof sind zu Fuß leicht zu erreichen. Die Betten waren sehr bequem,das Frühstück war super lecker und alles war sauber. Wir werden auf jeden Fall wieder da übernachten wenn wir nach Southampton reisen.

Den var mkt bra, det enda som saknades var stolar någonstans förutom till frukosten, vi fick sitta i sängen vilket inte kändes så bra. Det fanns heller ingen sittplats utanför hotellet vilket var ett litet minus. Vi fick ett mycket trevligt bemötande och trivdes jättebra, roligt att se hur ett typiskt engelskt hus såg ut inifrån.

Mysigt litet ställe med ett trevligt, snällt värdpar som gjorde sitt bästa för att man skulle trivas!
