Nagoya JR Gate Tower Hotel

Sharp hotel, poor restaurant service

This hotel is super convenient and is my go-to when staying in Nagoya. It's distinctly above average when compared to other mid-level hotels in Japan, which tend to be cramped, plain, and depressing (Japan has poor standards/norms in this area). This hotel's decor stands out, with bright colors, a tasteful and modern room design, a fancy bathroom with bath and toilet separated in most rooms and a desk of sufficient size. My son loves watching the trains pull into Nagoya station below. However, the room is still on the small side, with two semi-double beds so close that I can lay in one and touch the person sleeping in the other. And the nicely integrated TV has surprisingly few channels and strangely random ones at that (I didn't even find American or British news). Finally, though the breakfast buffet is tasty (and also above average, by Japan's low standards) the restaurant service is awful. This time, the front hostess was coughing and hacking on us through her mask, even while taking our temperatures as a Covid precaution. Two restaurant employees physically barred me from visiting the buffet like bar bouncers until I had plastic gloves on *both* my hands (even the one carrying my own plate) even while there were no barriers whatsoever preventing customers from breathing on the buffet food. Finally, when I asked that the eggs be replenished, they brought me a plate with an amount suitable for a child. I had to ask them to return again with 3x the amount.

Location is good, very convenient and is connected to the Nagoya station and a few shopping malls. It’s relatively new, except the room is pretty small. Overall, happy with the hotel and will be back.

we had a wonderful time in Nagoya. Nagoya JR Gate Tower is very convenient hotel to stay. A bit pricy on Saturday night.
